Allahabad University Students’ Union (AUSU): Has the hope given up the ghost?

India’s one of the oldest and most widely renowned university, formally known as the University of Allahabad has damp sqib to improve institution’s political situation. The status quo has resulted in devastating the garden of democratic politics which gave even 3 Prime Ministers to the nation. The institution which helped deep rooting the democracy in the country has legacy of “no elections” after 2019.

Demand for Union

The demand for the Students’ Union has been resurging, yet it has always been considered a “cloven hoof” by people at the top. Devesh Pandey, a media student at the University, says: “College life is incomplete without elections, but the situation expresses that the lock on the Student Union gate has left us with Hobson’s choice.”

Another media student, Shubhi Dwivedi, remarks: “We can not blame only the government or the university administration for the ban. What about those elements who enjoyed power but ended in fiasco to convince and eliminate ban.”

DUSU and AUSU

Every year, Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election sparks the demand for the removal of the ban on student unions in other universities. Social media, flooded with glimpses of DUSU elections, creates goosebumps among politically inclined students. This time too, the demand for AUSU has surged following DUSU elections.

Student Leaders’ Failure

An enlightened leader works intelligently, understands situation and turn a hair accordingly. But, at Allahabad University, malefactors lead golibazi (hooliganism) in the premises, killing the chances of political descendant in the university.

Passing the Buck

Undoubtedly, passing the buck for ban between higher authorities and students can not yield positive results.

Solution

The long cooling-off period to keep unnecessary elements at bay should now come to an end. The eagerness of rank-and-file students for democratic politics should be addressed. The government and the university administration must work on a golden mean to revive student politics on campus. Dialogue tables can be shared with students to bridge the communication gap and eliminate hostility.
